Visit of Château-Gaillard

A visit to discover one of the most beautiful sites of the Seine Valley: Château-Gaillard

Château-Gaillard is a ruined castle built by Richard the Lionheart, the building was constructed in only one year (1196), the construction requiring more than 6000 men on site. The castle was meant to protect Normandy from the French but was eventually taken in 1203 by Philip Augustus after several months of siege.

The walk presented here starts from the banks of the Seine and requires a little more effort (15 minutes walk to reach the castle). There is a parking lot at the entrance of the city next to the bridge. To get to the castle you have to take the road next to the tourist office. The access to the outside of the castle is free.
