A walk in Embrun

A walk to visit the town of Embrun in the Hautes-Alpes and then to the lake of Serre-Ponçon

The walk starts with a visit of the old town then continues to the leisure centre of Embrun located on the lake of Serre-Ponçon, the walk is quite long (4 km for the outward journey), the walk isn't difficult but the climb is severe to go back in the old town. The path is pedestrian.

A very small park is located next to the cathedral, the panorama on the surroundings of the city is grandiose. Not much remains of the Archbishop's Gardens, which were confiscated and sold after the 1789 revolution.

The walk to Serre-Ponçon
From Embrun you can walk to the lake of Serre-Ponçon. Signs indicate "plan d'eau" (body of water in English), in fact the body of water is located right next to the lake of Serre-Ponçon. The easiest way to reach the lake on foot is to take a footpath at the beginning of the town just before the supermatket "Leader Price". Beware the lake is quite far: 3 km.

After a rather steep descent we have a magnificent view of the town of Embrun set on its rock.

Along the Durance

Along the Durance
You then follow the Durance for a few kilometres to get to the lake, you can meet many sportsmen who train on a road closed to traffic. Embrun is famous for its triathlon, one of the most difficult in the world.

The Durance is the most important river in Provence. The lake of Serre-Ponçon was created from a dam on the Durance.

Embrun Leisure Base

At the end of the walk you can rest and swim on the beach of the Embrun leisure base, it's free. Then you have to go back the same way. You can also take a bus back to the city centre (look at the timetables).
