The vestiges of the Roman period mark out the course. Important center of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, Autun shelters a medieval city around the cathedral Saint-Lazare.

The construction of the cathedral dedicated to Saint Lazarus began around 1120, and was completed around 1146 - 1147. The cathedral was to attract the pilgrims of Compostelle leaving from Vézelay to the city.

You can walk through the remains of the Roman wall. Of the initial 6 km long enclosure, only a few traces remain around the cathedral. The base of the ramparts is Gallo-Roman and completed by the remains of a medieval citadel.

The Ursuline Tower

The tower of the Ursulines is in fact a keep. It is the last vestige of a citadel dismantled around 1600. Donated to the Ursuline sisters, it is now the International Cultural Center of the Ursuline Tower.
