Walk in the park of Rambouillet

The park of the castle of Rambouillet consists of an English garden and a French garden. It is certainly one of the most beautiful parks of the castles of the Paris region.

Le Château de Rambouillet is easy to access, it is located at about 1 hour from Paris.

A few words to describe the environment, the castle belonged to various personalities before becoming a royal domain with the purchase of the property by Louis XVI who built a dairy for the Queen as in Versailles. The estate then fell into oblivion before becoming a holiday resort for presidents from 1886. General de Gaulle gave many receptions in Rambouillet. Today the castle is no longer a presidential residence, it can be visited, the entrance ticket gives access to the castle, the dairy of the Queen and the Chaumière aux coquillages. The park can be visited free of charge and is worth the trip on its own, the opening hours are usual.

Practical information

Starting point

The start is near the city centre, you can of course park directly next to the castle but I think it is more interesting to discover the castle on foot. The parking is free on Sundays. There is also a limited time parking.

Le Rondeau

Beautiful pond at the start of the walk. At the entrance of the park you can rent bicycles, pedal go-karts, electric carts, Rosalie for families and children.

We are in the French garden with its characteristic alignments and symmetries.

The castle seen from the park

The castle was built from the 14th century onwards, and has been remodelled many times since then.
4

The canal

There are several canals that run through the park, forming a group of 6 islands that are clearly visible on the map. Canoeing is possible until November, without docking on the islands.

The castle of Rambouillet

Small curiosity, it is necessary to leave the castle to join the other part of the park, there is no passage by the interior of the park to join the English garden. The canals prevent the passage of pedestrians.

Exit from the park

We go along the road to reach the other part of the castle (Queen's Dairy, English garden...). Further on you will find another entrance to return to the park.

The Queen's Dairy

You can visit the park of the Dairy free of charge, the access to the interior is paying. The Dairy is a gift from Louis XVI to Marie-Antoinette as in Versailles.

The English garden

A small river meanders through the park. Very nice

The wooded part of the park.

Le tapis vert

The canal is extended by a huge green carpet.
8

The canals

The park is really calm and relaxing, it is worth the detour. It does not have the coldness and grandeur of the park of the Palace of Versailles. The completely wild islands break the monotony of the too ordered garden.

The route along the canal

We return to the French garden.

The castle seen from the canals

The mixture of French and English gardens gives a lot of charm to this park. Moreover, it is not too big for the walkers.
