What a disappointment this walk in Cap Ferret was!

The reputation of Cap Ferret is well established. Newspapers and films have shaped a positive image of Cap Ferret over the years. We meet between young and well-to-do friends in an idyllic place around a bowl of oysters and a glass of wine. Unfortunately the reality is quite different... Our vision of Cap Ferret differs from most of the other tourist guides. Nothing seduced us in Cap Ferret. Of course we were only passing through for a day, if we had spent a week in a rich villa the impression would surely be completely different. We still think that the reputation of Cap Ferret is totally overrated, it lacks a unity, a coherence to this place. There are much more beautiful villages along the Atlantic coast.

The entrance to the fishermen's village

The place is not only a tourist site, there are still many fishermen and oyster producers in activity. There are also some restaurants and oyster bars. If you just come for a walk you can see everything in 5 minutes.

The entrance to the Cap Ferret lighthouse

From the fishermen's village you can walk to the lighthouse. There is also a parking lot right next to it. The price is 6 euros, for this price you can go up to the top of the lighthouse and visit a small museum presenting the history of the maps of the Arcachon basin.

There are two main must-see attractions: the visit of the lighthouse and the walk to the tip of Cap Ferret. Unfortunately the walk to the tip is not really possible anymore because of the degradation of the dunes.

The distances are important, it is better to travel by car, you will have to walk 20 minutes from the lighthouse if you want to reach the ocean. The walk is not interesting, you have to walk along the road and there are no sidewalks.

Parking in Cap Ferret

Positive point, the parking is most of the time free. It should be said that there is not really a parking place, we can park a little bit everywhere. We will pass again for the side preserved nature. There is not really pedestrian path it is necessary to slalom between the cycle tracks and the cars.

As the access to this beach is not easy you will not be bothered by the crowd even in high season you will not meet many people. The beach is not supervised.

The Horizon beach

The beach is supervised, it looks like all the beaches around, nothing exceptional. At least you are protected in case of bombing with the bunker right next to it and the military camouflage which is used as an umbrella.

The beach of the Vine

This small beach is located next to the port of La Vigne. There is nothing like the smell of diesel in the middle of the boats to start your day of idleness lying on the beach. Cherry on the cake there are many people in summer.
