Discovery of the city of Douarnenez

The city of Douarnenez is located in Finistère in Brittany.

The proposed walk follows more or less a discovery trail of the city of Douarnenez created by the tourist office. This route is called "Le chemin de la sardine", there are markers all over the city center with a map and explanations detailing the history of sardine fishing in Douarnenez - Information on the route. If the landscape along the ocean is very beautiful, it is not the same for some buildings of the city center which deserve a small renovation. Enjoy your visit!

The port of Rosmeur

The port of Rosmeur is the historical port of sardine fishing in Douarnenez, more than 800 boats could leave from the port to fish for sardines. In the streets above the port lived a miserable population.

Le Grand Port

Today the fishing activity is decreasing but remains important with more than 1895 tons of sardines landed in 2015. Nevertheless, the port is turning more and more towards service activities. There is also an industrial zone right next to the port.

The Ladies' Beach

There are two beaches located right next to each other. In the distance you can see Tristan Island which is accessible on foot when the tide is low. Guided tours are organized by the tourist office.

In the background you can see the marina. Douarnenez has three ports. You can take a footbridge a little further to join the other bank.
