Discovering the Chausey Islands

The Chausey islands are located in Normandy, a few kilometers from Granville.

The Chausey Islands are a must-see if you are in the area. You must of course take the boat to go to the Chausey islands - timetable of the connections. The landing stage is located on the big island (the only one that can be visited), then it is not difficult to find your way around because the island is relatively small, if you walk fast you can go around in less than two hours! The best thing is to let yourself be lulled by the spectacle of the descent of the waters which makes hundreds of submerged islets appear. There is a grocery store and restaurants on site restaurants.

Boats departing from Granville

The crossing to the Chausey Islands takes one hour from Granville. The fare for one person is quite high: 33,5 €. You can get your tickets before boarding at the ferry terminal, there is also a store in the city center. The departure times change every day depending on the tides.

Rocks at low tide

Chausey is one of the few places in the world where the difference between low water and high water can reach 15 meters. If you can, you should come to Chausey during the high tides, the show is even more impressive.

The castle

While passing along the path you will be surprised to discover a kind of castle. It is an old fort restored by the industrialist Louis Renault who fell in love with the Chausey islands. Today it is a private property that cannot be visited.

This is the beach of the Chausey islands, it is supervised during the summer season. The amplitude of the tides is so important that it is sometimes necessary to walk a lot to get your feet wet.

The fort

The fort was built in 1866 but was disarmed by 1906, it never played an important military role and is not visited. In 2015 a completely naked couple was found lifeless in the moat of the fort. They fell from the top of the ramparts during a lovemaking session!

Store and restaurants

If you go up to the top of Chausey Island, you'll find a shop, a bar and a hotel restaurant. Due to the island's location, prices are fairly high, with the restaurant's first menu priced at €33 and featuring blue lobster. It's best to book ahead, as it gets very busy in high season.
