Hiking between Etretat and the Antifer lighthouse

A hike to discover the coast and the cliffs between Etretat and the lighthouse of Antifer.

Etretat is located in Normandy, 2 hours from Paris. It is a picturesque town where many artists stayed (Maupassant, Monet, Maurice Leblanc...) The hike starts from the center of Etretat and then follows the cliffs to the lighthouse of Antifer. You then have to retrace your steps to return to Etretat. The walk is quite easy although there are some steep slopes. At the beginning the crowd can be present but once the golf of Etretat passed there are not many people. The whole course takes place on top of the cliffs with magnificent views of the sea and the cliffs.

The Arsène Lupin clos

Le Clos Arsène Lupin is the villa of Maurice Leblanc (the author of Arsène Lupin) transformed into a museum. He spent all his summers here for more than 20 years. His famous novel "L'aiguille creuse" is partly set in Etretat.

The needle of Etretat

The needle is this 50 m high point detached from the cliff. In the Arsène Lupin novel, the needle is supposed to be hollow and contain the treasure of the kings of France.

Void above the cliffs

It is not recommended to get too close to the edge and it is easy to understand why.

Walk on the cliffs

It is the closest place to Etretat and therefore the most frequented by tourists. There are some facilities on the cliffs. Very quickly while moving away one finds calm. Most people stop here.

The route also runs along protected natural areas. These areas belong to the Conservatoire du Littoral.

The route is not so easy, it presents many ascents and descents between the different cliffs.

The Antifer lighthouse

The end of the walk. The lighthouse is an automatic lighthouse, it cannot be visited. Further on you will find the port of Antifer which is an oil terminal.
