A walk in the parks and castles of Rueil-Malmaison

A walk in Rueil-Malmaison along the Seine then in the forest. Most of the way is on footpaths.

The route of this hike is very pleasant, first you walk along the Seine in the country of the impressionists then you go up to the top of Rueil-Malmaison to go down to the city center. On the way you can visit the Malmaison castle. It is not very big and you can visit it in 1 hour. There is an entrance fee but it is free on the first Sunday of the month. The castle was inhabited by Napoleon and his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais at the beginning of the great Napoleonic period. Josephine died in this castle which she kept after her divorce. She is now buried in the church of Rueil-Malmaison.

You can start the walk from the RER A station in Rueil-Malmaison. All along the route there are signs with information. The beginning of the walk is on footpaths, then the route becomes more urban.

The start of the walk is right next to a car park, you can also come from the RER. The station is located 15 minutes away

The banks of the Seine

If you wish, you can simply walk along the banks of the Seine, you can go to Bougival by following the pedestrian path along the Seine.

From the other bank of the Seine, other walks are available (chemin des impressionnistes)

The plain

You can see the tunnel of the A86, you have to pass over the National thanks to a footbridge to go to the heights of Rueil.

Panorama

The ascent by the path is a bit rough but the panorama on the west of the Ile-de-France is worth it. At the top, there is a belvedere with orientation tables to recognize the surroundings.

The forest of Malmaison

It is not indicated on the itinerary but you can go to the pond a little higher. It's a 10 minute walk.

The Malmaison castle

By a small detour and by leaving the park of Bois-Préau one can visit the castle (paying). The castle was inhabited by Napoleon during his first years of reign (Consulate period). The entrance is free on the first Sunday of the month.

Bois-Préau

A statue of Josephine de Beauharnais who kept the chateau de la Malmaison after her divorce. The castle of Bois-Préau cannot be visited.

The park of Bois-Préau

Bought by Josephine in 1810, the Château de Bois-Préau is located in a 17-hectare English-style park that was linked to the Château de Malmaison. As an annex to the latter, it housed the doctor's quarters and the Empress's guests.

The city center of Rueil-Malmaison

The Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church is notably known for housing the tombs of Joséphine and Hortense de Beauharnais.
