The iceboxes of Sylans

A beautiful visit of ruined industrial buildings near Nantua in the Ain

The Sylans ice houses are ruined industrial buildings located right next to the lake of Sylans. Before 1850 it was not possible to create ice industrially. In order to have ice in the summer, it was necessary to store the ice during the winter from the water of the lakes, to preserve it and then to ship it by train in the summer. The Sylans ice houses were used for a short period from 1864 to 1917. After this date, the creation of industrial ice made their use useless. The visit of the Sylans ice houses is very easy, the place has a lot of charm. If you are in the area, don't hesitate to visit the Sylans ice houses.
