The Fauvettes viaduct

This impressive viaduct is located in the Paris region, an hour's drive from the center of Paris.

The viaduct is located in the commune of Gometz-le-Châtel not far from Gif-sur-Yvette. You have to come by car because there is no real public transportation nearby. Afterwards, if you are motivated, you can come by RER and get off at the station of Bures-sur-Yvette. Very nice little walk with quite important climbs, the forest is very dense, you really have the feeling to be in the countryside. The viaduct is very impressive. In addition you can practice sports activities (climbing, trail). Not to be missed.

Practical information

Sign indicating the Fauvettes viaduct

The departure can be done at the level of the Optometry Museum (134 Route de Chartres, 91440 Bures-sur-Yvette). There is a sign indicating the start of the pedestrian path and there are some parking spaces available. You can get closer to the viaduct by continuing on the road and following the sign "les fauvettes".

Trail

You will find these signs along the course. Indeed there is a training circuit for the trail, it is quite rare to find this kind of indications. The signs are very difficult to follow.
1

The rise

It is a strange forest because there are many paths and the vegetation is rather dense. We feel at once isolated from the road whereas it is close. There is no indication for the viaduct, it is enough to find a way which goes up.
2

The railway tunnel

After having gone up to the top of the hill, we reach the old railroad line. You have to pass through this very beautiful tunnel. Be careful, it is not illuminated and once in the middle of the tunnel you can't see the path anymore.
3

The view from the viaduct

Very beautiful sight on the surroundings once arrived on the viaduct.
2

The top of the viaduct

The viaduct is a former railway. It was built in 1913 for the Paris-Chartres line. Three trains will circulate per day between 1931 and 1939. The SNCF decommissioned it in 1953.

We find easily paths to go down to the bottom of the viaduct. The slope is important.
2

Climbing at the Fauvettes viaduct

2

The viaduct seen from below

The viaduct is often called "the most beautiful cliff of Ile-de-France".

Climbing routes

As usual in climbing, the routes have names. To be able to climb the climbers have dug small holes in the stone. There are many routes already equipped.
