The castle of the Madeleine in Chevreuse

A nice walk to discover the town of Chevreuse and its castle located in the park of the Chevreuse valley, 1 hour from the center of Paris.

The city of Chevreuse is located in the heart of the regional park of the Chevreuse valley. It can be the starting point of many hikes in the park. The most famous is undoubtedly "le chemin Jean Racine" which will lead you to the Abbey of Port-Royal. For this walk we just stay in the town of Chevreuse and go up to the Madeleine castle. To visit Chevreuse it is better to come by car because the RER stops a few kilometers away in Saint Rémy-lès-Chevreuse. The walk is not extraordinary but it is easy and pleasant. Ideal to change the ideas on a Sunday. The view from the Madeleine castle is worth a look.

The start

The parking is free, there are 200 places available but you have to be careful not to arrive too late if you want a place on busy days.

The small bridges walk

The walk is an easy path that you can follow for a few hundred meters. There are some lovely laundries along this small canal.

You pass the church of Saint-Martin on your way to the château de la Madeleine. Its origins date back to the 11th century.

The climb is a little steep but accessible, with no major difficulties. It takes around 10 minutes to reach the top of the hil

The Madeleine castle takes its name from a chapel dedicated to Mary Magdalene which no longer exists.

Within the walls of the Madeleine castle

Construction of the castle began around the year 1000 on a rocky promontory overlooking the valley. Its primary role was to protect the inhabitants of the village from attack and pillage. In its early days, it consisted simply of a rudimentary building surrounded by a wooden palisade. Over the centuries, the castle was enlarged and embellished.

The park house

The castle houses the house of the park of the Chevreuse valley. Going down into the basement you can visit a cellar of the castle which was used to store provisions.
