Walk around the citadel of Château-d'Oléron

An easy and quick visit to the city of Château-d'Oléron located not far from the bridge of Oléron.

Construction of the citadel began in 1630, and was partly designed by Vauban. A visit to the Château-d'Oléron citadel offers a fine view of the whole region. There are perhaps a few missing information panels on the history of the citadel. There is, however, the eternal sign of repentance about the triangular slave trade.

The Royal Gate

Visits to the citadel are free of charge. The Porte Royale provides access to the arsenal and powder magazine. Built in the 17th century, this imposing gateway was once the main point of access to the fortress.
