Hiking in the southern part of the island of Brehat

A visit of the island of Bréhat located in Northern Brittany.

A small hike to visit the southern part of the island of Bréhat. The path goes along the sea most of the time, we can also see the tide mill of Birlot, the chapel Saint Michel and the beach of Guerzido during this walk. It is very easy to change the route if you wish. There are many small roads and the island is not very large (3.5 x 1.5 kilometers).

The site is undoubtedly beautiful, the very mild climate favors the development of a large number of plants. Unfortunately, it is not a paradise for hikers or walkers. Indeed one often circulates on the road between two low walls delimiting private properties. It should however be noted that in Brehat the circulation of the cars is prohibited.

To go on the island it is necessary to take the boat at the point of Arcouest located at a few kilometers of Paimpol. The crossing takes only 10 minutes. The island is very touristic during the summer.

Vegetation along the sea

The mild climate of the island allows for lush vegetation (pine trees, palm trees) that one would not expect to find in Brittany.

From the chapel Saint Michel we have a very nice panorama of the island of Brehat and the other islands of the archipelago.
1

The tide mill

In a tide mill it is not the force of the wind that drives the mill wheel but the force of the water. At high tide the water is forced into a basin and at low tide the water is released from the basin to turn the wheel. There are not many tide mills left in France.

The tide mill wheel

The wheel is driven by the sea water according to the tide. The mill is still in working order.
0

The landing stage

The places of arrival and departure depend on the tide. At low tide it is necessary to walk for some time before reaching the small port.
