The City of Wine in Bordeaux

If you have money and time to spare, you may be interested in visiting the Cité du Vin in Bordeaux.

The Cité du vin is a new museum located in Bordeaux, it was inaugurated in 2016. You need a car to get to this museum as it is not very close to the city center. You will see its characteristic silhouette from a distance as you walk along the banks of the Garonne River. The exterior architecture is very successful and suggests the best. Unfortunately the disappointment is even greater. I must admit that creating a museum about wine is not an easy task. How to evoke wine without almost drinking and tasting it? This is a question that the designers have solved with technology: screens, videos, audio devices... It's not necessary to leave your home to watch videos alone. The museum is like the city of Bordeaux: cold and tasteless.

The City of Wine in Bordeaux
Let's start with the only positive point: the very successful exterior architecture.

The hall of the Cité du Vin

The hall of the Cité du Vin
Everything is very beautiful, the museum is very recent. Of course you have to go through the ticket office, price 22 euros. For this price you have the right to drink a 1/4 glass of wine on the top floor and to visit the permanent exhibition. The customers who visit this kind of place have of course the means but the price is really too high.

The reading room

The reading room
Why this book fair? We only find books related to wine. How many visitors pass through this lounge to read a book or a magazine?

The terminals

The terminals
They give you the usual audio player when you enter and then it's up to you. You spend the visit with the headphones on your ears all alone looking at screens like in the Parisian subway.

The visit

The visit
Each screen has a theme and you can see a small video associated with that theme. It's really a shame to go to a museum to watch videos that you could better enjoy in a chair at home.

The projections

The projections
A projection space with a video on the history of wine in Bordeaux. How sad, how lacking in life for an exhibition on the theme of wine.

The relaxation corner

The relaxation corner
A somewhat zen corner with music and images projected on the ceiling. It's nice but it has almost nothing to do with the wine.

Always screens...

Always screens...
We vary a little the pleasures with the arrangement of the screens.

The scent corner

The scent corner
You can test your sense of smell with these little machines. This is still by far the most interesting corner.

Arrival on the top floor

Arrival on the top floor
After going back down to the first floor to take the elevator, you arrive at the highlight of the show: the tasting of a glass of wine with a panoramic view of Bordeaux. You have the right to take a little walk on this hideous footbridge where people get in the way as soon as there are 3 people. The more affluent people go to the beautiful restaurant just below.

The tasting

The tasting
You can choose between several wines, there are even foreign wines.

The view on Bordeaux

The view on Bordeaux
We can see the city center of Bordeaux in the distance, the Cité du Vin being a little off-center.
