Reims is known worldwide as the capital of Champagne. The visit of the cellars of the great houses (Pommery, Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger... ) is of course a must when visiting Reims. This walk focuses on the city center, the cellars being a little further away.

The Kodak Building

More than 50% of the city of Reims was destroyed after the First World War, so the city had to be rebuilt in the 1920s. The Kodak building is a beautiful example of Art Deco building built in 1929, it is the first one in the city to be equipped with elevators. You can discover other Art Deco buildings such as the Carnegie Library or the Halle du Boulingrin.

Place Drouet d'Erlon

Lovely, lively street with many restaurants. Beware you will have a hard time finding other restaurants outside this street, they are all concentrated in the same place.

Model of the cathedral of Reims

The cathedral suffered particularly during the First World War, on September 19, 1914 a bombardment set fire to the frame, the Germans think that the towers are used as observation posts, they will not stop bombing them, in total more than 300 shells reach the cathedral. The restoration took time because it is only in 1937 that the cathedral becomes again a place of worship.

The stained glass windows of the cathedral of Reims

Most of the medieval stained glass windows of the cathedral of Reims have disappeared. As you walk around, you will be able to admire more contemporary stained glass windows that have replaced those that were too damaged.

The statues of the façade

The current cathedral dates back to 1211, there are more than 2300 statues adorning the facade. 25 kings have been crowned in this cathedral, the last one being Charles X in 1825.
