The clearing of the armistice

During the Great War the French had built a railroad to bring guns into the middle of the forest. In 1918 the front was only a few kilometers away.

The clearing

During the war there were only trees in this part of the forest. The artillery had to be hidden from the German air force. After the war it was decided to create a monument to commemorate the armistice. The initial project was to create a large square resembling the Place de l'étoile in Paris with a Triumphal Arch. The monument was not erected because the funds were lacking, only the clearing was cleared.

The Triumphal Arch that was to be erected never saw the light of day. In the middle of the clearing a large slab with an inscription was placed. The slab was dismantled and sent to Germany in 1940 and reinstalled in its place in 1946.

The museum contains a replica of the wagon where the armistice of 1918 and 1940 was signed. The historical wagon was taken to Germany in 1940 to show it to the Germans.
