Walk in Autun, a small city in the center of Burgundy, at the gates of the Morvan. Founded by the Romans, the city was called Augustodunum (the fortress of Augustus). The vestiges of the Roman period mark out the course. Important center of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, Autun shelters a medieval city around the cathedral Saint-Lazare.

Tympanum of the cathedral

The tympanum of the cathedral represents a scene of the Last Judgment. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Lazarus (one of the first bishops of Marseille in the 5th century).

Saint-Lazare Cathedral

The construction of the cathedral dedicated to Saint Lazarus began around 1120, and was completed around 1146 - 1147. The cathedral was to attract the pilgrims of Compostelle leaving from Vézelay to the city.

Circuit of the ramparts

You can walk through the remains of the Roman wall. Of the initial 6 km long enclosure, only a few traces remain around the cathedral. The base of the ramparts is Gallo-Roman and completed by the remains of a medieval citadel.
